Are you Stuck in a Style Rut?

Life is constantly changing and change is the only CONSTANT! Fashion changes every few weeks, our body shapes do so over the years, we put on or loose weight not to mention the pregnancies.

In the same way, our personalities can evolve and our lifestyle can take a major U turn for a whole lot of different reasons. When that happens, we need to make sure that we adapt to those changes and remain able to still project who we are in the way we dress.

For the majority of women, this permanent need to adapt can be overwhelming and that is when the dreaded “Style Rut” happens.

A Style Rut can happen at any age, and it is simply when you get stuck in one way of thinking or dressing, without adapting to the changes that have taken places in your life and around you. When that happens, instead of feeling depressed, see this as an opportunity to update and upgrade, embrace the opportunity to make some exciting changes!

There are commonly two types of Style Ruts:

  • The Comfy Rut:

You are scared to try new styles or you are just too busy to think about trying something new. You just stick in your comfort “Style” zone and grab what you know works for you and saves you time. You find yourself wearing the same old over and over and guess what is your favorite color? Black of course! You keep buying the same clothes, you feel uninspired, bored and usually your wardrobe is filled with clothes but you have nothing to wear. Sounds familiar?

  • The Memory Lane Rut

You feel like you have left your fashion sense behind. You are stuck (maybe emotionally) in a certain stage of your life. This happens a lot after having babies, our bodies change, we feel more of a woman but we are still dressing like in our 20’s.

Take this simple test and answer the following questions:

  • Do you have good intentions of dressing up but when caught for time you end up wearing the same safe outfits again and again?
  • Do you wear Jeans more than three times a week?
  • Do you only buy classic colors such as black, grey and white?
  • Are there clothes in your wardrobe that you have never worn, or do not even remember buying?
  • Do you have only one or two handbags that you take with you everywhere?
  • Do you wear trainers when you are not exercising?
  • Is your wardrobe filled with “make-do” rather than “must-have” items?
  • Are you left deflated. confused or even overwhelmed after a shopping trip?
  • Does opening your wardrobe feels like taking a trip down memory lane?
  • Do you often shy away from trying anything new or different or the latest trend in?
  • Do you have two photos taken in different decades of yourself wearing the same outfit?

Suit Powerful Suit!

The suit is the single most important garment worn by men; not only because it is the most expensive and requires the greatest amount of time for selection and fitting, but because it is the garment on which most people judge the wearer’s status, character and abilities.

And since it covers the upper torso, which is the focal point of most people with whom we communicate, it is the central power garment, the one garment that establishes our position as inferior, equal or superior in any in-person business situation. In this case the equality policy just does not work. You are wearing a suit or you do not! And if you are against a person who is wearing a suit and you do not, guess who will win the case, the sale, the woman? (OK just kidding for the last one).

Suits are positive authority symbols, worn by the upper middle class, the people who make important decisions in our society. Parliament, White House, Elysee Palace…We are much more likely to believe, respect and obey the man who wears a suit than the man who does not. Men who do not wear suit may have important functions in our society, but we do not normally accord them such in our minds. In any level of society, suits are associated with authority, with position, with power.

Take God for Your Business Partner!

“Why not organize the business of living in a big way? Why creep along, as some people do, from one tiny steppingstone to another, instead of striding out boldly? Why be content with poor health, uninteresting work, or restricted conditions, when many other people have already risen above these things? There is a way out of limitation that never fails. It is simple. It calls for no formalities. It requires no money. It is obvious enough when you realize it, but it is strange how many people nevertheless overlook it.

It is this, take God for your partner. If you will really make God your business partner in every department of your life, you will be amazed at the quick and striking results that you will obtain. I have said that this partnership will cost no money, but I did not say it would not cost anything. As a matter of fact it will cost you a great deal, because the price will be your whole life—but it will be worth it.

Of course, if you want God to be your partner, He will have to be the Senior Partner, and you will have to include Him in every corner and every phase of your life. If you are prepared to do this, the result will not be in doubt. Most people would be thrilled to be able to go into partnership with some great industrial or financial magnate; they would feel that their future was assured. But here is a partnership with Infinite Wisdom and Infinite Power awaiting you. Take God for your partner.”

As for me, God is the only shareholder and He has 100% because I know what  is His is mine for the taking!!!!

Are you working from home?

People who work from home can sometimes grab the first thing they see in the morning yes I know what you are thinking “let me lounge about in my pj’s or trakie bottoms no one will see me anyway ” well that’s a no no!!!!

Having an extensive wardrobe of all the latest fashions isn’t really necessary, particularly if you are working from home. Establishing your unique image and a strong sense of individual personality and style is the key. You may only need a few quality signature pieces that reflect your individual style that you can mix and match. You don’t have to look different every day, You just need to look good and professional.

So if you are working from home…”Get up and get dressed ditch the pj’s and trackie bottoms”. Put on something smart and comfortable.

I’ve often read that it helps to have a separate work place in your home, a dedicated office phone line – well it’s the same with your personal brand and professional image. Making calls, sending emails and acting in a professional way to run your business, means dressing in a professional way too.

Now I don’t mean you need a shirt and tie or a corporate outfit but choose clothes that make you feel like you’re working. You must look smart not only in the eyes of the people you’re around but your own eyes as well. It’s about creating positive energy.

Some kick start their day with a run or walk. Why not choose to start work on the high of looking good?

Why Image is important?

“Image is the way other people see us it influences whether people will agree to our request hire us, or pay us the salary we want.” (excerpt from our Dress Your Way to Success workshop)

The better your image the better the chance of your promotion!

Within 30 seconds you have been judged, your business has been judged and your potential client will determine whether they trust you and whether they want to do business with you. 30 seconds is a very short time to make a positive impression but let me tell you that it can be achieved!!

Knowing how to look is the first part of the challenge. The other half is how to act so you stand out for the right reasons.

Managing your appearance is an important part of who you are it tells people about your personality and your lifestyle.

First and lasting impressions are made up of the following:

  • Physical appearance of you, your business, logo, staff uniform state of your office and your car.
  • Business etiquette which is awareness for appropriate behaviour and with any awareness it’s important to look inward at ourselves and who we are, our personal traits and our brand.

Your personal brand is so important and you should be portraying an authentic consistent  image in all business relationship.

Your future is in your own hands you have the power and the ability to get what you want.

Model your behaviour and image on a person who is successful in business and who you admire. Dress for success and for the job you want, not for the job you are in. These are just some of the topics we cover in our workshop.
